General Conference

I was impressed with the theme of general conference, as I saw it. I know it was mentioned that there was not an conference theme or assigned talks--but my impression was that the universal theme of the brethren was caring for our children and youth--magnifying our parenting, teaching, and support for them. I assume they all have the same impression from their work in the vineyard--that the wickedness of the world is penetrating the hearts and minds of our youth; that we're losing too many youth to the influence and temptations of the world. Their encouragement: care for them, parent them, teach them, love them, lead them. It's an interesting take-away for me, as I don't have any children or grandchildren that fall into the high-risk categories that they were seemingly focused on. I imagine that in a few years when Finn and Adelie are a bit older the mists of darkness and temptations of the world will become even stronger--so these messages will become a daily reality for you as parents and more important for me also.

My personal take-aways with this theme: (1) perhaps there are opportunities for me within our ward to get closer to, strengthen, and support a few of the young people (2) let's not kid ourselves, the wickedness of the world is not targeted exclusively at youth--those same themes, mores, and temptations can negatively impact any of us--at any age; so active caution and vigilant preparation are in order for me and each of us.

That's what I heard. I see the red flags. I also was impressed with the one prophetic message on Saturday morning by Elder Packer that declared with conviction that we will win the battle--a message of hope, that truth, righteousness, and faithfulness will prevail.

Love you all, Dad

Pete, I loved your synopsis of GC. I too thought those were the major themes - how loudly the Lord is trying to get us to see how important it is to foster testimony starting young and then continuing ever on. I really appreciated Elder Bednar's talk and the advice he gave about parenting. Overall, just wonderful.

Thanks for the thoughtful post, dad. Being a fresh new parent, I especially appreciated this conference. I loved all the talks about parenting and the importance of mothers & fathers. I look forward to reading the talks and studying this guidance more.

Thank you for being a wonderful parent to me. I know we don't express it often enough as children, but I am incredibly grateful to you & mom for your continued love and your unending support & all the prayers you said over the years for us children. I would not be experiencing the joy in my life that I am now without loving parents who continued to guide me & direct me in a loving way.
